Luseal spends night in family’s bathroom By Sarla Donovan WHEN LARRISSA McEwin’s husband, Finn, found a seal pup at the top of Gebbies Pass, she wasn’t expecting it to spend the night in her bathroom. But that’s exactly what happened. The couple’s house is halfway between Teddington and Motukarara, several minutes drive along narrow, winding roads, so how the seal pup got there is a mystery. “It was there in the car park near the walking track, right near where we live. My husband called me up and said: ‘What do I do?’ It was a Friday evening, there was a storm arriving and there’s boy racers everywhere up there on a Friday.” She called the Department of Conservation, which asked if she was okay to have it for the night and return it to the beach the following day. “I was a bit surprised. I said sure – but how do you look after a seal? I didn’t have any fresh fish in the house. We opened a tin of tuna for it which it didn’t eat of course. It slept on the floor in the bathroom. It was a very good house guest, didn’t make much noise at all. We poked our heads in every now and then to check on it, and there were its wee eyes looking up at us – it was gorgeous! I’d love to have kept it.’’ Mrs McEwin christened the pup Luseal. “My five-year-old daughter thought it was amazing. We made a collage of photos and she took it to school for show and tell.” DOC senior ranger Anita Spencer said they had had several calls on the after hours

The seal pup was in good condition, which indicated it had been weaned and was doing well.” On Sunday morning, Mrs McEwin took Luseal down to Purau Beach. “Finn carried the box; we walked around the rocks and it hopped out and sat there, looking at us and looking at the water. Then it toddled off into the water and swam off. It was doing big twirls and lifting its flipper; it went right out into the harbour then swam back and looked at us, as if to say ‘thanks for having me’.”

UNEXPLAINED DEATH Police are not treating the death of a 28-year-old Indian woman on Monday morning as a homicide. They are making inquiries on behalf of the coroner to establish the cause of death, which is unexplained. Emergency services were called to a Selwyn St apartment at about 9.10am and found the woman’s partner performing CPR on her. Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottom said the woman’s name would not be released until family overseas had been notified. He said police and victim support are helping the family who are coming to terms with a tragic loss.

FAKE RUGBY MEDIC Police have not yet spoken to the man under investigation for allegedly impersonating a medic and assisting an injured rugby player during a colts game on July 8. The investigation was launched after the man, who was wearing a shirt that made him appear to be a medic, fitted the injured player with a neck brace and administered an unknown medicine.

JSJ Investments bought the neighbouring property a couple of years ago. Director Nick Johnston, who also owns the NRJ Construction which is building the townhouses, said the development was compliant because the land was zoned L3. The zone allows for residential medium density housing. He said the reason it was so close was because Ms Mehlhopt’s home had been built too close to the boundary.

The proximity of her home was not considered when designing the townhouses, he said. “In L3 you build the max site coverage.” But Ms Mehlhopt said “working to the letter of the law doesn’t make it right.” “They have not been sensitive to the needs of the neighbourhood.” She said her 121-year-old house’s location had never been an issue, and the city council must have placed the boundary around it after it was built. Ms Mehlhopt said she knew nothing about the townhouses until contractors started working on site a couple of months ago. She said she should have been consulted.

But now, five two-storey townhouses are being built next door to her Bolton Ave home – the garage less than 1m away – has made the 50-year-old very, very angry. The city council says the effect on her property is less than minor. When finished, the residents living next door will look out of Kim Mehlhopt their windows directly into her front yard, living room, a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and back yard. “It is so close, they’ll be able to hear me peeing, and I will be able to hear them humping,” Ms Mehlhopt said. He said the development was compliant and all inspections had passed. The District Plan did not require garages to have a setback, as long as it did not exceed 10.1m in length along the boundary, he said. The setback for other buildings was 1m, he said. The decision to allow the development could only be overturned by the courts, if there had been an error in the processing, he said. Ms Mehlhopt said on Tuesday a contractor put his ladder on her front lawn to install the spoutings next door because there was no room over the fence. She said she asked him to leave three times, and verbally trespassed him. “If the city council consents to this, they must know you can’t complete the project without touching somebody else’s land.” The contractor then stood on the fence separating the two properties to do the work, ini-

tially without wearing a harness, she said. Ms Mehlhopt reported it to WorkSafe. A WorkSafe spokeswoman said it would write to the business concerned seeking a response. She said it did not meet the criteria for an immediate on-site visit because it did not pose an imminent risk. Ms Mehlhopt said she also phoned police who said it would be difficult to enforce a blanket trespass on contractors because there were so many coming and going. Spreydon-Cashmere Commu-

nity Board chairwoman Karolin Potter said “terrible” situations like this were happening more frequently, which was concerning. “It’s so unfair for people who have bought a house thinking the symmetry of the street will stay the same.” Ms Mehlhopt met with Labour Wigram MP Megan Woods yesterday. Dr Woods said she would follow it up with the city council, and would also have a broader discussion with Spreydon residents about it happening all over the suburb. “That’s very high density and very close.” Ms Mehlhopt, who is currently unemployed, said she requested the townhouse plans and would tee up a visit with a city council planner to discuss it. Burning log causes Airbnb house fire By Andrew King A BURNING log falling out of a fireplace caused the huge house fire which hospitalised six tourists in Sumner. The wooden, three-storey house on Clifton Tce went up in flames about 8.30pm on Sunday while a Malaysian family of 10, renting it through Airbnb, were upstairs praying. Specialist fire investigator Mark Thomas told The Star yesterday material falling from the fire had caused the blaze. “The place had a lot of modern furniture, which has a heavy fuel load, and the house was timberframed with timber cladding. That, combined with the furniture, is why it went up so fast, but that is not unusual in house fires. They can get very big, very fast,” he said. Of the six taken to Christchurch Hospital, four had moderate injuries and two had minor injuries, mainly smoke inhalation, a St John spokesman said. Mr Thomas said the family was alerted to the blaze by a smoke alarm which saved them from serious injury or worse.

“One of the men tried to smother the flames but they overcame his efforts and he suffered burns to his arm,” Mr Thomas said. The family escaped through the back door, as flames had blocked the front, he said. “Once they were outside their yelling alerted one of the neighbours, who phoned 111, which is exactly what we want people to do,” he said. High school students win beard battle By Gabrielle Stuart A BATTLE for beards at a Canterbury high school could open the door to rule changes around facial hair at other schools. Lincoln High School students have won a year-long campaign for facial hair, with the school board of trustees agreeing to drop its clean shaven-only rule as a trial. It came after a survey of staff, students and parents at the school found many supported allowing facial hair. Secondary Principals’ Association chairman Phil Holstein, who is principal of Burnside High School, said he expected more Canterbury schools would have their policies questioned because of the trial at Lincoln. “There has mostly been consistency with uniforms, but once you start varying from it more schools start to follow,” he said. A 16-year-old Hornby High School student was suspended two years ago for refusing to shave. He chose to leave the school and enrol in correspondence school after the dispute. Most Christchurch high schools, including Hornby, still

Board of trustees chairman Adrian Paterson said the board had not yet finalised the conditions around the trial, and that was set to happen at the next board meeting. He said the trial would run until the end of next year, when the

board would evaluate it again. “We will look at how many students take it on board, and whether any issues crop up. The question is will it affect their learning, and obviously we thought it shouldn’t, but we may come across issues.” Lincoln High School principal Kathy Paterson said the survey had shown opinions on facial hair had been divided. She would not release the survey results, which she said were still being worked on. “I would prefer to keep the status quo, but that’s my personal view. We’ve got to be willing to listen to the voice of students and parents, and that’s what we’re doing,” she said. Hornby High School principal

Robin Sutton said his school was open to changes, and had recently made its uniform requirements gender-neutral, after a presentation by students. But he said there were no plans currently to change rules around facial hair, because it impacted the community perception of students, he said. “They make judgements based on superficial things like what students look like,” he said. Linwood College principal Richard Edmundson said students regularly asked him about the clean shaven rule, but he had no plans to change it. He said that was partly because of the risk of bullying. “It avoids kids saying I can grow one and you can’t,” he said.

Halswell lake claims mother, father

By Kurt Bayer A DRIVING lesson turned into tragedy leaving a five-month-old baby an orphan and a family mourning. The bodies of Sheetal Ram, 31, and her husband Avneel, 27, were removed from a lake in Halswell yesterday morning after a car plunged into the water on Tuesday night. Family member Hinesh Kumar identified the bodies at the scene as those of his sister-in-law her husband, police are yet to formally identify them. The couple are the parents of a five-month-old girl. The large group of family and friends formed a guard of honour as the bodies were carried from the lake shore to the waiting hearse. Mr Kumar said Avneel was a “hero” for trying to save his wife after their car slipped into the lake, reportedly while he was giving Sheetal a driving lesson, about 5.45pm. The family is devastated and are being consoled by friends. “This is obviously a very tragic event for the wider family, many of whom are here at the moment,” Superintendent Todd said.

Witness Jordan Fleming said he was walking his dog past the Westlake Reserve when he saw a woman in a red hatchback in the car park, and a man outside trying to open the driver’s door. “I heard the accelerator go and that’s when the car went off the bank down the hill into the lake,” he said. The man jumped in and swam after the sinking car, diving and resurfacing several times, Mr Fleming said. Then he dived and did not reappear. Firefighters and police tried to dive down to the vehicle to see if anyone was trapped inside. Other witnesses said two other people who tried to save the pair were taken away by ambulance. A diver went into the lake but came up indicating he could not reach the vehicle, locals say. The lake sits in the middle of a housing development in Halswell. Residents say it’s a deep former shingle quarry, popular with runners, walkers, cyclists and children feeding ducks.

More trouble at housing complex

Rugby boys get bigger

PROBLEMS AT the Pickering Courts social housing complex are continuing, with several units and vehicles vandalised over the weekend. Tenants at the St Albans complex found yellow graffiti sprayed on their units and vehicles on Saturday night. The vandalism is the latest in a string of problems at the complex. The Star revealed last week that police have been called several times in the past year over problems, including disorder, injuries and threats to shoot other residents’ pets. Resident Dawn Satherly, 80, had her car vandalised on Saturday. She has lived in the complex for more than 20 years, and said she had never seen so many problems. “The place has absolutely deteriorated,” she said. She said she called police when she discovered the graffiti at about 10pm on Saturday, but she had not heard back. She also notified the Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust, which manages the former city council housing complex. Trust chief executive Cate Kearney said the trust pro-actively followed up on any tenancy-related complaints.

Rae’s decades-old fight for National By Bridget Rutherford IF YOU’VE seen a friendly looking chap parked on the side of the road with a National Party sign waving to motorists – that’s Rae Mills. The 76-yearold has been sitting on the side of busy roads at peak travel times promoting National every election for the last decade. But he’s been volunteering for the party for much longer. Mr Mills, who moved to Christchurch in 1984, wasn’t always a National supporter. He switched from Labour about 40 years ago when he was chairman of Southland’s Otatara Kindergarten committee. National had been in Government and told Mr Mills it had pledged money towards a loan for the kindergarten. But when Labour won the 1972 general election, Mr Mills was told the Government did not have the money in its budget. Mr Mills said he then marched into National’s

He also faces three charges of failing to answer bail. The Christchurch rapper captured the hearts of New Zealanders when his debut album The Crusader was released in 2003. It went gold within hours and platinum after just a few days. Luafutu was remanded on bail to a case review hearing on November 14. His bail conditions require him to report to a police station twice a week.

By Gordon Findlater CANTERBURY’S sporting heroes will once again see the light of day after Lancaster Park’s Pillars of Pride were salvaged last week. What is next for the pillars, which were created to recognise Canterbury rugby and cricket greats, is yet to be decided. The Canterbury Rugby Football Union Historical Trust has come into possession of the 26 rugby pillars, which were left stricken at Lancaster Park ahead of its demolition. Warren Barberel, who is leading the trust’s efforts to salvage the pillars, says there are a few ideas currently floating around such as placing them around Rugby Park. Some of the former players represented on the pillars, their families and clubs have also inquired about getting their hands on some of them. Fergie McCormick, who still holds the record of 222 games for Canterbury, was the first to have a pillar created. He still remembers the day his pillar went up at Lancaster Park and described it as a huge honour and a great memory.

The historical trust has been operating out of the old physio room at Rugby Park for the past two years, collecting Canterbury rugby memorabilia. The idea to set up the trust came just over a decade ago during the CRFU’s 125th anniversary. “The objective was to form a little group and we would attempt to get a hold of memorabilia,” said Mr Barberel. The trust currently has around 2000 items, which range from programmes and jerseys to boots, films and books. “The dream is that we would have a Canterbury rugby museum,” said Mr Barberel. “Let’s see what we might get if we get a new stadium.” The trust also has the 12 cricket Pillars of Pride, including the likes of Richard, Walter and Dayle Hadlee. Canterbury Cricket are expected to collect them shortly.

He was obviously stoked to hear the pillars had finally been recovered. “That’s marvellous – I’m pretty over the moon about that,” said McCormick. “I didn’t want to see them end up in a pit.” He is keen see the pillars put on display at Rugby Park if all the former players and families agree. Otherwise, he’d like to see it stay within his family and on display at Linfield Park

– the home of his Linwood Rugby Club. Ian Penrose, who captained Canterbury 64 times in his 103 appearances between 1963 and 1971, is also happy to see the pillars safe and is open to what happens next. “If everyone can agree to a display at Rugby Park, I’ll be happy,” said Penrose. “Otherwise, I may look at offering it to the museum at New Brighton.” The Pillars of Pride are made

News Meet new friends and make money by Hundreds of people in Christchurch are now opening their homes to complete strangers, as home-stay networks like Airbnb, Couchsurfing and Bookabach take off. Gabrielle Stuart spoke to some of the hosts WHEN ARIANA Braving wakes up in the morning, it is usually to a house full of strangers. More than 500 people have stayed at their Russley home in the year since she and her husband, Ryan Braving, first listed it on Airbnb. Each morning she lays out a breakfast for the guests – cereals, tea and coffee – answers any questions they have, and sometimes drops them off to the airport or to pick up rental cars. After the guests leave, a couple of hours are spent cleaning and changing bedding, then getting the rooms ready again – restocking toiletries and making up the beds with crisp new sheets and neatly folded towels.

It’s a lot of work, but she said it had also changed her life. Last year, she quit her job as a scientist to pursue her dream of being a life coach. The extra income from Airbnb meant she could afford to spend the year studying and starting her own life coaching business.

“It’s almost a part-time job, helping me do what I love to do,” she said. There are about 2000 Christchurch homes currently listed on Airbnb, ranging from $15 for a bed in a shared central city unit, to $1298 for exclusive use of a seven-bedroom luxury lodge in Ferrymead, complete

with a spa, sauna and indoor pool. It uses a review system similar to Uber or Trade Me. Guests can see reviews of a host before they book a room through the website or mobile app, and hosts can see feedback left about the guest before they accept a booking. Bookabach is a similar service,

started in New Zealand in 2000. Its focus is holiday homes and baches, with about 3000 currently listed around the South Island, including cabins in the bush, ski chalets, and homes on private beaches. The Couchsurfing service is also popular, with more than 5000 hosts listed in Christchurch. It’s difference is that guests stay for free, with the focus on building relationships – it is often used by travellers, who open their own homes and then stay with people from other cities. Wanaka resident Terry recently stayed with the Bravings on the way back from a two-month trip around Europe – where he stayed at dozens of Airbnbs. He said he had been using the service for more than five years, and his experiences had been overwhelmingly positive – from the home in the Italian alps which looked like it was “out of a fairytale,” to the messy looking flat where the residents were so friendly he stayed for five days. “The main thing is you’ve got to do your research. Check what the comments are like, they’ll usually show you any issues,” he said.

She said the majority came from Europe or Africa, but they also had guests from more unusual places such as Zimbabwe Kate Dickson or South America. She said they had never had any serious problems with guests, although a few had been rude or really dirty. They had spent about $1500 on high quality sheets and towels to set up the rooms, but the extra income had covered the expenses pretty quickly, she said. The couple have listed their rooms for $26 for a single bedroom, $54 for a queen bedroom, or $105 for both. Their location close to the airport meant they had guests staying most nights, even in winter, she said.

BEACHSIDE: At $220 per night, Kate Dickson’s self contained North Beach studio is more expensive - but it comes with use of their pool and sauna, a full kitchen and bathroom and even complementary crackers and cheese.

She said it had been a great experience, but she did not think they would carry it on long-term. “If you have a lot of guests it does get tiring, because you don’t have privacy,” she said. Privacy was also a concern for hosts Kate Dickson and Martin Little, who have listed their selfcontained North Beach studio on Airbnb. “For me, personally, the self contained part is the clincher. It depends how much you like your own space,” Ms Dickson said.

Their studio is one of the higher-priced listings on the site, costing $220 per night. But it has proven very popular, especially over summer – it is already booked for all but four nights in January – and it recently made the Airbnb NZ list of most favourited listings around the country. She said they built the studio as a home office for their design and marketing business, but no longer used it. They joined Airbnb hoping it would pay for their rates, she

said, but it had proven a lot more popular than they expected. “We were so amazed by how popular it was. Every morning I’d look at my phone and say: ‘Oh wow, another request’.” She went the extra mile to make the place feel like a luxury stay, ironing the sheets and providing cheese and crackers when guests arrived. She said some of the guests had been fascinating people – including a United States navy commander, and a photographer who had worked on the set of TV shows like The Blacklist. Since they started hosting, the

couple had done more travelling themselves, she said, staying at Airbnb homes in Hawaii and Australia. Spark and Angela Weng have been hosting people since 2014, and their Addington home is one of the most popular in Christchurch. Mr Weng said he had lost count of the number of visitors, but he estimated it was close to 1000. At $34 per night for a stay in their ensuited spare room, they didn’t make a lot of money through the service – but they did it to meet people, he said. “We’ve made some good friends, and that’s more important than money. Friends from France and Italy and Singapore and Hong Kong,” he said. Their youngest guest had been a 4-month-old baby from Germany, and the oldest an 80-year-old American who was still travelling the world. He said they would keep hosting as long as they had a spare room available. “We meet different people and we learn interesting things. It opens our minds, too, which is really great,” he said.

US legal battle over Health blow prompts plan to restore father’s classic car for former city woman By Gabrielle Stuart FOR THE Cornish family, life has revolved around cars, the garage and the race track. So when Gary Cornish was told he had terminal cancer last month, his five children decided restoring a special car was the best way to honour him. They are looking for help to restore Mr Cornish’s classic Ford Zephyr Zodiac Mk3, which has been in the family for about 30 years. His daughter, Stefanie Cornish, said he had always planned to restore the car once he retired – but the cancer diagnosis had cut that plan short. Mr Cornish has both brain and lung cancer, and learned three weeks ago it was untreateable. His family was told this week he may not live to see the end of the year. “He doesn’t have very long left, so we’re just trying to do as much as we can for him before he goes, because he’s done a lot for all of us kids,” she said. 3D printing used to heal broken bones The Star is running a series on the work of University of Otago researchers based at Christchurch Hospital, ahead of their public showcase next month. This week we look at how 3D printers may be used to heal broken bones

Christchurch researchers are growing veins in the laboratory as part of a project aiming to create large 3D-printed pieces of bone for use in orthopaedic surgery. The work is being done by the University of Otago’s Christchurch Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering (CReaTE) Group. CReATE’s Dr Khoon Lim said a focus of tissue engineering researchers was being able to produce large, functional pieces of replacement bone, with their own blood supply or veins. The CReaTe group were worldleaders in the field of research, he said. Dr Lim said one of CReaTE’s current projects is developing

an implant to boost the healing of patients with traumatic bone fractures requiring surgery. “Now when patients break bones, surgeons often graft bone from another part of the body.

We are working on a way for patient’s own cells to be implanted into the defect to harness the natural healing capacity of the body, without the trauma of graft surgery.”

Dr Lim says a personalised ‘scaffold’ would be 3D-printed to match the shape of the damaged piece of bone. Layers of human cells and proteins are then infused through the scaffold. When the scaffold is implanted in the patient, different proteins will be released at different stages of healing. The first stage is the growth of new blood vessels. “The idea of what we are trying to achieve is that the patient can return to their normal activity of everyday life. This means that their broken bone, for example, is as strong and functional as it was before.” The laboratory-stage work is being funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand. Dr Lim hopes the technology could be used in surgery within five years.

CReaTe is part of the University of Otago, Christchurch’s Orthopaedic Surgery Department. Professor Gary Hooper is head of the department and one of New Zealand’s leading orthopaedic surgeons, so CReaTE’s research is done with a view to how it could benefit patients and surgeons. •You can find out more about 3D-bioprinting research at the University of Otago, Christchurch’s Showcase on October 1 from 1–5pm. Women’s suffrage reminds us of importance of voting A SIGNIFICANT part of Christchurch’s history is being celebrated at the national conference of the New Zealand Council of Women being held here this weekend. Although the history of the National Council of Women dates back to its formation in Christchurch in 1896, three years after the successful campaign for women’s suffrage gave New Zealand women the right to vote in a world first, it was in 1917 that the Christchurch Branch of NCW was formed. In preparing for welcoming the conference delegates, I have been looking back at the history of the suffrage movement and NCW, both led by Kate Sheppard, which are as much a part of our history as a city as they are the history of our nation. Although the issues may have changed, the underlying principles have not. In the 1890s, according to Te Ara, “they were concerned with such issues as

the introduction of old age pensions, the regulation of hours and conditions of work, the extension of technical education both in primary and in secondary schools, and penal reforms such as the classification of types of criminals, the introduction of the indeterminate sentence, and the abolition of capital punishment. “They were also concerned with equal pay, and with compulsory jury service, for women. They also endeavoured to encourage women to serve on local bodies. Later, they turned their attention to advocating the appointment of women as justices of the peace and as members of the police.” I mention this, as it is important to remember

that we can make gains as women, as minorities, as people with disabilities, only to see them disappear with the stroke of a legislative pen. There is an expression ‘use it or lose it’. Okay, no-one is going to take away our right to vote, (although there is always a risk around local democracy as we know here), but if we have won gains we value, then we have to participate if we don’t want to lose them. I’ve already voted in this election. There are a lot more advance polling booths this year and no longer do you have to attest that you won’t be in your electorate on the day. Viewpoint I get are ‘when did I last see Jacinda’ and ‘what is my favourite colour’. However, there is also a smattering of questions that go to the heart of this election. Cleaning up rivers and making sure we don’t mess up our world is top of their lists. Lots of the local schools are taking part in the Electoral Commission’s mock election where children are encouraged to look at what the parties are saying and will be asked to cast a vote based on what they have found out. This is an outstanding initiative and the commission and the schools taking part deserve huge congratulations. Let’s hope this creates a generation of voters. I love campaigns but this engagement by children with what is going on is putting an extra spring in my step. Children get into election I VIVIDLY remember the 1984 election. I was 10-years-old and there was a sense that change was in the air. I remember watching the new candidate for Sydenham, Jim Anderton, holding a street meeting outside of our family home. I also have brief snatches of memories of the 1981 election held in the wake of the Springbok tour. I remember driving along Lincoln Rd and asking my dad what “Think Big” on the signs meant. I’ve been recalling these memories as I have been watching the growing fascination children are having with this election. It seems that the events happening around them are pulling some of them away from their screens and iPads. They are turning up at my street corner armed with questions and a desire to know more. Author captures best of humanity Larina Tiffen from Miss Lilly’s Angel Trust has written a book about Christchurch residents who, having experienced a disaster themselves, stepped up to help after the 7.8 magnitude North Canterbury earthquake in November. She spoke to Gabrielle Stuart Could you tell me a bit about the people in your book? They’re really just ordinary people doing extraordinary things in a time of need to help other people. The book is called Come Together, and we’ve featured 30 local families who suffered in the Canterbury earthquakes. They tell their stories of how the earthquakes affected them, and why they came to help Miss Lilly’s Angels after the North Canterbury earthquake. It must be difficult to pick – but could you tell me a couple of their stories? Well, there was Phil and Mike, who lost their homestead and then their dad in the earthquakes. When the North Canterbury earthquake hit, they drove as far as they could and then walked the rest of the way to Kaikoura to try to help. Another was Maria, who on September 4 was giving birth to her daughter when the power went out and everything turned to custard. been through it herself and she knew how terrifying it was. Then there were the people from North Canterbury, like Sparky, who was home with his wife and daughter and five grandchildren when the earthquake hit. How they got out alive I don’t know. They were isolated and could hear the slips all around them. As the kids were coming down their stairwell, the hot water cylinder popped up and buckled the stairs, so one of the boys couldn’t get past. He had to go out to the deck and jump and, as he jumped, the whole deck collapsed. Then they got to the railway and as they got there they saw the sea was gone. So they said, if we go up the hill we’ll be hit by rocks, if we don’t we’ll be hit by a wave. He lost his job, and lost his house and meeting him I said s**t, things are tough. But he said money is the root of all evil, and the fact the family is okay is priceless. And Richie’s in the book, with Christchurch Helicopters. I spent a lot of time with him flying things back and forth for people. He worked so hard, I have a lot of respect for him and all the team there.

So there are no broken buildings in this book, because it’s about people, it’s about us healing through other people’s stories. And you’ve been writing the book while managing your food truck and catering business? Yes, and I have a two-year-old and my husband works away from home, so there have been a lot of days I have been up until 2am writing and then catering the next day, functioning on three hours sleep. I’ve been working on the book since January almost every day. Today, I got the final proof, and there were lots of tears. So tell me about your background? I’m originally from Timaru. I studied as a counsellor and worked for a while with New Zealand Police in victim support and with women’s refuges. After the Canterbury earthquakes, I worked with a lot of people and with children traumatised by it. And I saw that through my own individual experience, because my family lost three homes and lost jobs and had to relocate. We went through it ourselves, too. That’s actually how we built Miss Lilly’s, with recycled stuff from our own home. So when Kaikoura was hit, I felt it was my time to pay it forward after all the good will we had received.

Publican Craig Bradford said business had been “flat out” all weekend after the grand opening on Thursday. Rock classics sure to be on Barnes’ set list By Bridget Rutherford

BIG NAME: Rock and roll legend Jimmy Barnes says he’s looking forward to headlining the next Selwyn Sounds.

JIMMY BARNES hasn’t decided what songs he will play at March’s Selwyn Sounds. He will choose on the day when he sees the crowd. “I get to a set and I have a look at the audience – what are they doing, are they having a good time? And I’ll pick the set accordingly,” he said. One thing’s for sure – he plans to “rock out” and give the crowd a good show. The legendary Aussie rocker will headline the day-long music festival at Lincoln Domain on March 3 alongside The Feelers, Mental as Anything, The Mockers, Stellar, The Narcs, The Ladykillers and The Warratahs. It follows this year’s inaugural event, which saw Jordan Luck Band, Mi-Sex, Dragon and other Kiwi heavyweights play in front of about 10,000 people. Barnes, who now lives in the Southern Highlands, New South Wales, said he couldn’t be sure if he had visited Lincoln before. But he enjoyed playing in small towns. It took him back to where he started as lead singer in Cold Chisel, he said. “I’m looking forward to it, it’s a beautiful part of the country,” he said.

“I like to support the area, especially after the earthquakes.” Barnes said he enjoyed visiting New Zealand and the “nob******t” people. “If I get the chance, I’ll buy a place.” When his music career began in the 1970s, he never imagined some of the songs would still be crowd favourites today, he said. Khe Sanh, which was recorded in 1976, was an example, he said. “When you get up and play it, you can see young and old and they’re all there singing it. The song is as relevant now as it was then. How it connects with people, it makes it all worth it.” And in spite of being one of the best selling Australian music rockers of all time, Barnes said he enjoyed a variety of genres. He was a big fan of Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Paul Rodgers, Stevie Marriott, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Finn and even Sia. “I had to sing Chandelier and I realised how well written the song is. I’m a big fan of hers.” Barnes, who changed his last name from Swan after his stepfather Reg Barnes, was born in Glasgow and emigrated to Adelaide as a five-year-old. Last year, he released his autobiography Working Class Boy, which told the tale of his child-

hood, growing up with violence and abuse, up until joining Cold Chisel. The next instalment, Working Class Man, will be released next month. Although he hasn’t decided exactly what songs he would play in Lincoln, he reckons classics such as Working Class Man, Khe Sanh and Flame Trees will be in the mix. “I know I want to play rock ’n’ roll, so probably a cross section of myself and Cold Chisel.” And it will be a real family affair. His kids, Jackie, Elly-May and EJ, and wife Jane will perform alongside him at Selwyn Sounds, with son-in-law Ben Rodgers, Danny Spencer, Lachlan Doley and Michael Hegarty. Barnes said he wasn’t sure whether he would be staying in Lincoln or for how long, but if so, he would likely be out and about looking for a nice place to eat. Daffodils normally naturalise in a garden requiring little or no attention. However, when there is erratic flowering (given they are growing in similar soil and light), remedial work on the bulb is required. Once the foliage has died down on your daffodil bulbs, dig up the non-performing bulbs (firstly marking them with stakes during the flowering season) and check them. It’s possible that the bulbs are diseased, have been attacked by some underground insect or they may simply need dividing if they have been in the ground for many years. You may wish to plant new daffodil bulbs next autumn in areas where existing ones are not flowering. Select large, healthy bulbs of proven varieties, and plant into well prepared sites i.e. friable soil with Daltons Compost and/or Daltons Premium Bulb Mix worked into the existing soil. When green foliage starts to push through the soil, feed your bulbs by applying Daltons Premium Bulb Fertiliser. Dig the fertiliser in lightly and always water in well. After your bulbs have finished flowering, apply the fertiliser once again to support them in bulking up their stores for next season.

Control fungal leaf curl in peach trees By Sarah Frater LEAF CURL (Taphrina deformans) is a common fungal disease that effects peach, nectarine, peachcott, and peacherine trees. It causes the leaves (and some times the fruit) of the infected tree to become puckered, curled and much thicker than normal. If left untreated the problem will get worse year-after-year and reduce the tree’s ability to produce lots of fruit. Over winter the fungal spores take up residence in different parts of the tree, but mainly in the

buds. When the cool wet weather of spring and summer arrives many leaf curl spores are produced and are then splashed or blown from tree to tree. Because this is also the time the trees are breaking bud and forming new leaves, the new growth is easily reinfected with leaf curl. Controlling leaf curl isn’t easy but good orchard hygiene habits, which should be repeated each year, will give you the best chance. Plant your trees where they will get adequate air movement – this will help minimise problems. In spring apply a light dressing of a quick acting fertiliser such as

sulphate of ammonia to encourage new leaf growth. At the same time, I also recommend applying a seaweed fertiliser to help the plants’ immunity to leaf curl. In autumn and early winter clean up around the base of any peach and nectarine trees and removing as many leaves as possible. Because these types of trees are susceptible to leaf curl, I suggest doing this regardless of whether they’ve shown any signs of disease. Don’t compost the leaves. A copper-based fungicide will help stop leaf curl on peach and nectarine trees but it will also treat fungal problems on other trees.

And what is there not to worship about disco-dancing nuns crossed with soulful toe-tapping beats bound to take you to cloud nine? Go-go boots, disco balls and shimmering lights are in the house, as Showbiz Christchurch stages its groovy new production of Sister Act. This show is a visual spectacle, and when those nuns get down to boogie in their sparkling getups under gleaming stages lights, it will leave you dazed – seriously, this show is bright. But there is a heart-warming substance behind all those sparkles which stars a vocally powerful cast led by the bold Monique Clementson. As many will know already, the story is sets around a hopeful diva who finds herself in a convent as part of a witness

Yet this tale will have you beaming from ear-to-ear as oneline wonder, Deloris Van Cartier (Clementson), transforms a tone-deaf choir of nuns into a heavenly-sounding ensemble. The nuns made the show, especially in large ensemble numbers Take Me to Heaven and Raise Your Voice. The fact their dancing was ever so slightly out of sync at times was actually what made them compelling to watch. To me it emphasised real people learning

the joys of dance and breaking away from everyday, conventional life. A highlight is when Nickie Wellbourn, as the no-nonsense Sister Mary Lazarus, raps – no

surprise that received a big applause. The choreography was clever, especially the dynamic performance of When I Find My Baby, featuring gangsters and edgy

dancers, Ella Wilson and Jenna Morris-Williamson, as hookers. Clementson did a marvellous job of the Philadelphia accent, which was no easy feat. While it sounded as though the microphones needed to be turned up slightly in the opening number, Clementson is a strong performer and her charismatic stage presence made it easy to see why she was chosen for the sassy role of Deloris. You cannot forget the slickmoving sets, which add to the visual finesse of the show. Glitzy night clubs transforming into beautiful neo-Gothicstyle churches portray the theme of the show beautifully and deserved to be applauded. There is nothing like watching an unlikely friendship between a diva and a group of nuns blossom, and it was beautiful to watch the nuns put their lives on the line to save Deloris from murder. But humour and happy tunes are the bread and butter of this upbeat show and will have audiences bopping all the way home. •Sister Act runs at the Isaac Theatre Royal until September 23. Preheat oven to 220 deg C. In a roasting tray, lay out the parsley and mint, then add the sliced onions. Place the butterflied lamb leg on top of the onions, fat side up (there should be a thin layer of fat on one side). Score the lamb on the side with the fat in large diagonal shapes. Sprinkle over a large pinch of sea salt, and crack over plenty of black pepper. Rub the garlic into the slits where you’ve scored it, then sprinkle over the rosemary and

small iceberg lettuce. Cut the head into four wedges. Toast some walnuts. Crumble some good blue cheese and, using the white bits from the outer edges. Make a creamy dressing by blending them with walnut oil and a little cider vinegar (olive oil is fine if you don’t have walnut). Sprinkle the walnuts and the blue cheese crumbs over the crisp lettuce wedges and spoon over the dressing.

Many activities at Auckland’s Sky Tower By Mike Yardley

IT IS Auckland’s exclamation point, the city’s transcendent landmark. Isn’t it scary how fast 20 years has zipped by since Auckland’s skyline was first redefined by the construction of the beloved Sky Tower. I was living in Auckland at the time, hosting Newstalk ZB’s Overnight Show, and the rise of the tower struck me as the city’s coming of age. I recently enjoyed an Auckland weekender to celebrate the milestone anniversary. Picking up a Thrifty rental car from the airport, I purred into the city in surprisingly short time, thanks to the recent opening of another engineering triumph – the Waterview Tunnel. Costing an eye-watering $1.4 billion, the largesse is mindblowing, but it sure short-circuits travel time in and out of the city centre. Twenty years on, the Sky Tower is still a record-breaking tall boy, maintaining its stature as New Zealand’s tallest man-made structure and the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere.

In addition to the tower, I took the opportunity to sample some of SkyCity’s alluring culinary offerings. For dinner, I headed to the rustic and Italian-inspired masterpiece of Gusto at the Grand. Showcasing good honest food, classic flavours and fresh seasonal ingredients, the menu is curated by celebrated chef Sean Connolly, and the dishes are designed to be shared. My recommended share plate dishes include Clevedon buffalo mozzarella, heirloom tomato and basil; Cloudy Bay clams, spaghetti, garlic chill and parmesan; or how about Sardinian ravioli,

The SkyJump and SkyWalk are both operated by A J Hackett and because I’m not really a fan of bungy jumping, I opted for the SkyWalk. This soft adventure stroll around the Sky Tower pergola, 192m above ground, sounded like a very relaxing notion. But what I didn’t envisage is that the pergola doesn’t have any hand railings. So once outside, standing on the circular platform wrapped around the strutting The Sugar Club, I felt suddenly and queasily exposed with nothing but air on either side. In spite of being harnessed to an overhead safety line, I still felt hideously uncomfortable.

Summoning the fortitude to stay on-task, my fellow Skywalkers and I were led on an exhilarating walk around the Auckland skyline, circumnavigating the walkway, while our fabulous guide snapped photos and video as we performed sky-high ledge-leaning exploits, along the way. It’s an enthralling, heart-

pumping and utterly unforgettable experience. Buying a business can be a daunting task. Buying a franchise involves a whole extra raft of issues. Whether you are looking at buying an existing franchise business being sold as a going concern or a startup franchise operation you need to obtain specialist legal advice. Estelle Logan is the national franchisor for V.I.P. Home Services, together with her husband, John. They have been in the franchise business for 22 years, selling over 500 franchises during that time. They currently have around 130 franchisees nationwide. Their business operates at two levels. They sell master franchises – a buyer purchases a territory into which they sell franchises – and they sell individual franchises for their multi-service V.I.P. business in either Lawns & Gardens or Cleaning. “Understanding the complex relationship between the franchisor and franchisee is an essential ingredient,” explains Estelle. “Sometimes it is difficult as the franchisor to maintain the balance between being “the boss” and “the friend” of your franchisees. Our experience has been that you need to maintain a friendly but professional relationship with your franchisees, giving them support, understanding and empathy but maintaining the role of franchisor. “ So what makes a successful franchisor? “Honesty, Integrity and Professionalism with an open door policy for communication” responds Estelle promptly. “No matter who you are dealing with from the franchisees, suppliers or customers the credibility of your brand depends on it” Some people think that owning your own business is great and you can have time off when you want. However Estelle says that franchisee selection if one of her most important roles as a franchisor. Selecting the right franchisee for the right reason can be a challenge. To protect against wrong selection, VIP has a process and system they use for evaluating and selecting franchisees. “This takes away the guess work and emotions from the equation and

helps to ensure franchisees are successful. On the other hand, some people think running a business will be a breeze, but in fact it requires lots of self-discipline because there’s no one you are accountable to but yourself.” And what makes for a successful franchisee? “I call it the triple A’s” smiles Estelle, “attitude, aptitude and appearance. Skills can be taught, but attitude can’t! With the right attitude, the ordinary can became spectacular success! By aptitude I mean a franchisee must have the ability to respond to any situation which arises, meet customers’ needs, be service oriented and most importantly be willing to follow someone else’s system. They also need the right attitude, take pride in their personal appearance, keep their vehicle clean and they must be well organised. Popular Corolla builds on success By Ross Kiddie FOR DECADES Toyota’s Corolla was New Zealand’s top selling motor vehicle and with millions sold worldwide I couldn’t visualise that scenario ever changing. Well as time has served to prove, new car buyers in New Zealand aren’t leaning toward the traditional sedan/hatchback concept, they would rather have utes. You would have thought that if a ute was going to be New Zealand’s top selling vehicle then Toyota’s Hilux would have taken the leading role, well it hasn’t, Ford has stolen the show for the last few years with its Ranger. All that aside, Toyota are still in the hunt with Corolla, it is still the most popular car here and it has just had a fairly substantial refresh. New for 2017 going into 2018, the Corolla gets more safety and style. Notably, it has had a fairly substantial facelift with new grille, headlights and bumper, and there are LED daytime running lights on the range-topping ZR. There’s also a cosmetic refresh inside, the display graphics have been enlarged and improved for clarity, while minor trim elements have been upgraded. For safety, the new Corolla gets the benefit of a pre-crash safety system, lane departure alert and automatic high beam activation. These features are on top of an already extensive safety package. This evaluation focuses on the ZR which sits at $44,690; the entry-level sedan comes in at $35,990, while a mid-spec GLX sits at $38,990. All Corolla sedans have continuously variable automatic transmission and it is mated to the venerable 1.8-litre naturally aspirated engine that has served the model so well. Both have had tweaks here and there to improve efficiency and performance, the new Corolla also gets a sport mode which encourages busier engine behaviour and livelier transmission. That aside, there are few surprises with Corolla, it is the honest, capable familyfriendly sedan and hatchback that has carved out an enviable global reputation. It doesn’t do anything spectacular, but it is intuitive to

drive and simplistic to be behind the wheel of. It will suit many varying buyer types, and the changes have made it even more userfriendly and desirable. Under the bonnet sits the 1798cc engine, it is a twin-camshaft type with 16-valves, it is rated by Toyota at 103kW and 173Nm. Toyota also claim a 6.4• Price – Toyota Corolla ZR sedan, $44,690 • Dimensions – Length, 4620mm; width, 1775mm; height, 1460mm • Configuration – Four-cylinder, front-wheel-drive, 1798cc, 103kW, 173Nm, continuously variable automatic • Performance – 0-100km/h, 9.5sec • Fuel usage –6.4l/100km

litre per 100km/h (44mpg) combined cycle average for the engine which sits well with the evaluation car’s trip computer at 8l/100km (35mpg) over five days. The readout also lists a 6l/100km (47mpg) instantaneous figure at 100km/h, the engine turning over very relaxed at 1800rpm. On the subject of figures, the Corolla also has a healthy turn of speed. It will accelerate to 100km/h in 9sec and will complete a highway overtake (80km/h to 120km/h) in 6sec. All of these add up to a satisfying performance feel, along with the knowledge that a tank full of petrol isn’t going to break the family budget. With Toyota’s experience with the Corolla in this country you can guarantee it has been set up to compete well with local conditions giving the driver considerable pleasure during each and every drive and, of course, all occupants. The engine is lively

and works freely through the transmission, the seven-step CVT extracts well the engine torque characteristics and the peaky nature of twincamshaft engines. The slow operating manner at which the engine operates at highway speed is an indication that economy has been an engineering priority and that shows in fuel usage figures. In terms of handling, the Corolla is well firmed through the suspension, Toyota has made changes to the damper rates that have made the suspension more robust. The result is a strong sense of stability as the body moves just ever so gently over the suspension. I took the test car on a challenging route with many corners and many varying corner types. It’s hard to catch the Corolla uncomposed, the quietriding Yokohama tyres (205/55 x 16in) have solid grip and present the driver with strong feedback as to how they are reacting to the road surface. The whole car feels balanced and stable through the chassis. Comfort for all on board has also been a manufacturing priority. The Corolla sits as a useful five-seater and all passengers have plenty of space to spread out and relax. My only complaint with the ZR-spec sedan is that while it caters for those who prefer leather trim, there aren’t any seat heaters, on a cold Christchurch morning they aren’t at all inviting. However, it was good to be reacquainted with Corolla, it’s a case of a good car made better through upgrades. You can guarantee Toyota is working feverishly on the next generation model, and I’m so looking forward to when it arrives. In the interim, the current model is still spectacular in its own way, its success through the generations speaks for itself.

CANTERBURY UNITED Pride captain Annalie Longo is set to become the seventh Football Fern to rack up 100 caps this weekend. Longo is likely to become the latest centurion on a two-match tour of the United States and, while careful not to take her place in the starting line-up for granted, she’s looking forward to the moment. “It’s been a long journey with some amazing girls and it will be exciting. Hopefully I can get on the pitch and we can do the job against the US,” said Longo. The US – No 1 on the rankings and reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup champions – possess a squad packed full of experience and world-class talent. The 19th-ranked Ferns will have the odds stacked against them in Denver and Cincinnati, but Longo is relishing the challenge. “It will be good to see where we stand and there’s no better opposition than the US,” said Longo. The 26-year-old works as a women’s development officer at Mainland Football and is enjoying spreading the gospel of the female game. “It’s nice to be able to give back to football and try to

Patrick Thacker, prop (Christ’s College), Shilo Klein, hooker (St Andrew’s College), Louie Chapman, halfback (Christchurch Boys’ High School), Isaiah Punivai, centre (Christ’s) and Rico Syme, fullback (CBHS), are among 49 of the best secondary school players selected for the three-day camp. Impressively, three of the players selected from Christchurch are year 12 students. Thacker, Punivai and Chapman all have one more year of secondary school left, giving them the rare opportunity to be selected for the New Zealand Schools team twice. A New
